AP Programme

The AP Programme at ISA Wuhan integrates the holistic educational philosophy and assessment approaches of the IB with the AP curriculum. Structured around six academic subject groups, with AP Capstone at its core and interdisciplinary STEAM projects as an important learning platform, the programme balances academic depth with breadth of development. It aims to cultivate academically accomplished, globally minded students with strong inquiry, research and innovation skills, preparing them for admission to leading universities worldwide.

Global Recognition: A Gateway to Leading Universities

• Widely recognised: AP is recognised by more than 4,000 universities across over 60 countries, including Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Oxford, Cambridge and all Ivy League institutions.
• Advantages for university progression: AP scores of 3 or above may be eligible for university credit at some institutions, helping students save time and tuition costs. The AP Capstone Diploma further demonstrates the research, analytical and critical-thinking skills valued by leading universities.
• Potential English-language exemptions: Some universities may accept qualifying AP English results in place of TOEFL, IELTS or other English-language proficiency requirements.

AP Capstone: Two Core Courses

• AP Seminar: Develops students’ ability to analyse issues from multiple perspectives and conduct collaborative inquiry.
• AP Research: Guides students through an independent academic research project culminating in a 4,000–5,000-word paper.

Holistic Development

• Balanced subject choices: Students select courses across different academic areas to maintain breadth and balance in their learning.
• STEAM as a core requirement: Interdisciplinary STEAM projects form part of the graduation requirements, encouraging students to engage in authentic inquiry, research and creation.
• Differentiated learning: Advanced and standard levels of support respond to students’ individual learning needs and development.
• Global perspective: Students are encouraged to remain grounded in their own cultural context while respecting diverse perspectives and engaging with global challenges.

Balanced Assessment: Valuing Both Process and Outcomes

• Ongoing assessment as a major component (60%–70%): Includes class participation, assignments, laboratory work, projects, collaboration and academic writing, providing a broader picture of student learning beyond a single examination.
• Summative assessment (30%–40%): Includes mid-term and final examinations.
• Global AP examinations: AP examinations are administered worldwide each May and scored on a scale of 1–5. A score of 3 or above is generally considered a qualifying score, subject to individual university policies.
• High-achievement benchmarks: Competitive university applicants often present multiple AP subjects with scores of 4 or 5, while applicants to the most selective institutions may aim for 5s across several core subjects.
